ABOUT SUSAN:
Even growing up in Norman, Oklahoma, I knew “my soul resided in the light of the Southwest.” Given a Kodak Brownie at a young age, I have worked my way through Polaroid (film), Leica (film), Nikon(film and digital), and Canon (digital) cameras. My current digital camera of choice is a Canon full frame.

Formally trained in Anthropology (Univ. Okla., Univ. Chicago, Ph.D. Univ. Arizona) and Medicine (M.D. Univ. Kansas; Ob/Gyn Residency, Univ. New Mexico), I have been a Gynecologist in private practice in Albuquerque since 1989, retiring in the summer of 2011. Before starting medical school, I taught Anthropology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City for five years. I have published papers in peer reviewed journals in both Anthropology and Medicine.

An American Rose Society Accredited Horticulture Judge, and now Arrangement Judge Emeritus, I developed a serious interest in photographing roses. A need to learn digital photography for my work in roses led me to the University of New Mexico’s Continuing Education’s Digital Arts Program, from which I hold advanced Certificates in Digital Photography, as well as an introductory Certificate in Web Design. I was the first Chair of the Pacific Southwest District of the American Rose Society Photography Committee. A brief history of developments under my chairmanship are here. Between 2008 and 2012, I developed, with considerable input from Sally Long, Guidelines for Photography as a separate Division in Rose Shows in the Pacific Southwest District. My article about this can be found in the 2010 Rose Annual, published by the American Rose Society. I am currently a member of the American Rose Society Photography Committee.

As I learned digital photography, I also rapidly developed interests in Maternity, Newborn, Infant, and Family photography, as well as “just about everything else.” My inspiration comes from the magical light, long history and prehistory, and diverse cultures of my adopted state, New Mexico, “Land of Enchantment.”

Over time, I have found myself more focused on Fine Art and Nature Photography. That was not a conscious choice, but rather simply a matter of where my interests have led me, at least at the present time. A happy introvert by nature, I have also been surprised by how much I enjoy showing my images not just online but also in person in shows and exhibits.

In 2016 I began to publish photo essays as Kindle e-books available at Amazon. Later this year, “Seeing Color Colorblind” will also be available as a paperback. Visit Amazon, or preview the Kindles here:
